Welcome to this week’s edition of Kanji Of The Week!
Each week, we explore a meaningful Kanji and its cultural depth, helping you connect with symbols that speak to the soul.
🇯🇵 Kanji Of The Week: 信 (Shin) & 信仰 (Shinkō)
Faith is a powerful idea—whether it's faith in others, in oneself, or in something greater. In Japanese, this concept is represented by two related but distinct kanji expressions: 信 and 信仰.
信 (Shin) — Trust / Belief
This single character represents the act of believing or having confidence. It’s commonly used to express personal trust, reliability, and honesty in relationships. The character combines 人 (person) and 言 (word), symbolizing a person who can be trusted to keep their word.
Use 信 when you’re talking about everyday belief—trusting a friend, believing in your dreams, or standing by your word.
信仰 (Shinkō) — Spiritual Faith
When you add 仰 (kō, meaning “to look up to” or “to revere”) to 信, you get 信仰, which refers to religious or spiritual faith. It’s about devotion—faith that transcends logic, rooted in the heart.
信仰 represents belief in something sacred or divine—a force that provides comfort, guidance, and a deeper sense of purpose.
✨ Faith in Everyday Life
Whether you’re grounded in 信 (trust) or uplifted by 信仰 (spiritual belief), both kanji invite us to live with intention, integrity, and hope. They remind us that faith is both an anchor and a compass.
