The word 達磨 represents Bodhidharma, the monk who brought Zen Buddhism from India to China and later became an enduring symbol in Japan. His name evolved into the round, red Daruma doll, a cultural icon of perseverance and determination.

The design of the Daruma doll is unique. Weighted at the base, it always returns upright when pushed over, embodying the Japanese saying: 七転び八起き (Nanakorobi Yaoki) – fall down seven times, get up eight.
