Kanji Of The Week - Eagle - 11/16/2025

Welcome to this week’s edition of Kanji Of The Week!
Each week we explore a Kanji that connects Japanese tradition with timeless wisdom. This time we take flight with 鷲 (Washi), the eagle, a symbol of courage, clarity, and freedom.

🇯🇵 Kanji Of The Week: 鷲 (Washi)
The character represents the eagle, a bird revered for its strength and keen vision. It is made of two main parts:

  • 隹 (Furui Tori) meaning bird

  • 爪 (Tsume) meaning claw

Together they depict a powerful raptor, a bird of prey that soars high and strikes with precision. In Japanese writing, captures both the physical majesty of the eagle and its spiritual symbolism as a creature of the skies.

Common uses include:

  • 鷲 (Washi) – eagle

  • 鷲神社 (Washi Jinja) – Eagle Shrine, found in Tokyo and other parts of Japan

  • 鷲座 (Washiza) – the constellation Aquila, the eagle in the night sky

🎎 Cultural Significance
In Japanese tradition, the eagle represents power and focus. Its piercing gaze and mastery of flight make it a symbol of awareness and strength of purpose. The eagle’s presence in art and folklore often reflects leadership, freedom, and courage in facing challenges.

Shrines such as Otori Jinja in Tokyo honor the eagle as a divine messenger, a protector, and a bringer of good fortune. During the Tori no Ichi festival, worshippers celebrate perseverance and success by praying under the emblem of the eagle.

💠 Living with 鷲
To live with is to see clearly and act decisively. It means rising above fear, trusting your vision, and striking only when the moment is right. The eagle reminds us to look beyond the noise of daily life and stay focused on our higher purpose.
