The name 大阪 is written with two characters:

• 大 (Ō) – great, large, grand

• 阪 (Saka) – slope, hill

Together, 大阪 literally means “great slope.” The name reflects the city’s geography, originally built around gentle hills and river plains near Osaka Bay.

Historically, the area was once called Naniwa, one of Japan’s earliest capitals. Over time, the name evolved as the region became a central hub for trade, culture, and innovation.
