Welcome to this week’s edition of Kanji Of The Week!
Each week we dive into a kanji rich with meaning and tradition. Today we honor 侍 (Samurai), a character that carries the legacy of Japan’s noble warrior class and the values they lived by.

🇯🇵 Kanji Of The Week: 侍 (Samurai)
The kanji 侍 is composed of two parts:

• 亻 the radical for “person”

• 寺 meaning “temple”

Together, it originally described someone who waited or served near a place of importance, such as a noble or a temple. Over time, the meaning evolved into “one who serves” and eventually became the title for Japan’s warrior class, the Samurai.

Common uses include:

• 侍 (Samurai) – warrior, retainer

• 侍従 (Jijū) – court attendant

• 侍医 (Jii) – physician who served the court

The kanji reflects both humility in service and dignity in duty, qualities that defined the samurai spirit.
