Welcome to this week’s edition of Kanji Of The Week!
Each week we uncover a Kanji that holds timeless meaning. This time we focus on 禅 (Zen), the practice of quieting the mind and finding truth in simplicity.
🇯🇵 Kanji Of The Week: 禅 (Zen)
The character 禅 is read as Zen in both Japanese and English. It comes from the Chinese word Chán, itself derived from the Sanskrit Dhyāna, meaning meditation.
Built from:
-
示 (shi) – altar or spirit
-
単 (tan) – simple, pure
Together, 禅 expresses the essence of simple, direct meditation and a return to clarity. Common expressions include:
-
禅寺 (Zen-dera) – Zen temple
-
禅師 (Zenshi) – Zen master
🎎 Cultural Significance
Zen arrived in Japan from China during the 12th century and grew into a profound tradition shaping art, gardens, calligraphy, and martial arts. At its heart, Zen is not about doctrine but experience. It values stillness, simplicity, and being fully present in each moment.
💠 Living with 禅
To live with Zen is to strip away the unnecessary and return to what matters. It is about clarity of mind, calmness in action, and balance in life. 禅 teaches us that wisdom is found not in constant noise but in silence and presence.
